bunq Metal Card Review

There aren’t many digital banks that offer a cool metal card with their accounts. In recent years, metal debit cards have become very popular with people, and bunq’s metal card is no different.

We’ll have a closer look at how you can get it, the perks, whether it is, worth paying more for a bunq metal card, and how it compares to some of its competitors. But first, here’s our short, two-sentence overview of this article:

bunq metal card is available if you prepay 12 or 24 months for one of their advanced bank accounts. It only comes in white and acts as both credit and debit card, but without going into debt.

What’s the price of the bunq metal card?

bunq metal card was available for a one-time payment of €99. But now, you have to pre-pay one of their accounts to get it “for free”.

You can order the metal card only by prepaying any of the following:

  • 24 months of bunq Easy Money (€215.76 personal, €263.76 business)
  • 12 months of bunq Easy Green (€215.88 or €251.88)
  • 12 months of bunq Pack (Pack owner – €287.88)
  • €129 (Pack member)

Note that this pre-payment is non-refundable. You can downgrade and keep using the metal card but you won’t get your money back.

How can I add money to the Metal Card?

There are many options that you can use to add money to your card:

  • Cash deposit
  • Credit card
  • Debit card
  • IBAN transfer
  • iDEAL
  • Sofort
  • Wise deposit

Is bunq metal card contactless?

bunq metal card, but also other bunq cards are contactless. You can simply tap your card without the need to input your PIN in single transactions of up to €25, and €50 cumulatively. After you reach either limit, you’ll have to enter your PIN and the limit will once again reset.

What is the bunq metal card made of?

bunq doesn’t specify what their card is made of, I mean, it’s probably metal, right? They do say that it uses 50% less plastic so I guess it’s 50-50 metal-plastic then.

The metal card should last for six years, while plastic ones last for only four years.

Is bunq metal card a credit card?

bunq metal card is and isn’t a credit card. Let me explain. Merchants will see it in their system as a credit card, and therefore it’s more widely accepted and great for traveling.

But, the card will only use the amount that you have loaded on it. For this reason, you can’t go into debt as you would with a regular credit card. It’s more similar to a prepaid card or a debit card in this regard.

bunq wanted to make their metal card more travel-friendly than their debit cards which weren’t accepted at rent-a-car companies and some hotels. They are known to accept credit cards over debit cards because of the deposit you have to pay.

With bunq’s metal card, you can still pay the needed deposit, but you will have to have enough money in your account to cover it. Once the deposit is released, you’ll receive the funds in your account, and you won’t risk having a negative balance or falling into debt.
